Rebel News reported on remarks by NDP Leader Avi Lewis distinguishing the Alberta independence movement from Quebec sovereigntism, and then rebutted his argument on its Rebel Roundup livestream.
Lewis is quoted characterizing the Alberta movement as fundamentally different in origin from Quebec’s:
“This is a MAGA-aligned — potentially funded — disruptive movement that has been really thrown into national prominence by Danielle Smith. It’s not the same thing.”
According to the report, Lewis argued the Alberta movement has “no point of comparison” to Quebec’s sovereigntist tradition.
Hosts Sheila Gunn Reid and Tamara Ugolini pushed back, arguing that Lewis was delegitimizing Albertans’ grievances and treating Quebec’s cultural claims as more valid than Alberta’s economic and cultural ones. Ugolini questioned how Lewis could assert most Albertans want to remain in Canada absent a vote. The piece also notes that, as of reporting, the RCMP had found no evidence of foreign interference in Alberta’s sovereignty referendum process.
