NDP, Conservatives still mulling stance on online harms bill, social media age cap

Neither the Conservatives nor the NDP have taken a position yet on the online harms bill (Bill C-34) introduced by the federal Liberal government, which includes a high-profile plan to force social media companies to bar children under 16 from their platforms. The bill would also create a new digital regulator and impose a duty to act responsibly on the companies behind AI chatbots.

A statement from NDP Leader Avi Lewis said the party is assessing whether the bill effectively addresses the root causes of online harms such as misinformation and sexual exploitation, and is watching how the social-media ban for kids would be implemented — warning against “yet another massive data grab for Big Tech.” The Conservatives said they would examine whether the bill protects children while safeguarding privacy.
