Canada strengthens defence partnerships during NATO 2026

Island Social Trends reports on the defence and trade announcements Prime Minister Mark Carney made at the NATO 2026 summit in Ankara, Türkiye (July 7). These include an agreement-in-principle with Telesat for sovereign Arctic military satellite communications, an ~$800 million Joint Strike Missile procurement from Norway’s Kongsberg, a Light Utility Vehicle tender limited to two Canadian suppliers, technical negotiations to join the NATO Innovation Sub-Fund, Canada hosting the 2027 NATO Industry Forum, and launches of strategic-partnership and free-trade talks with Germany and Türkiye.

The report notes that the federal NDP opposes the proposed Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB), quoting NDP Leader Avi Lewis’s July 7 statement that the bank “sounds technocratic and reassuring. It’s not,” and that it amounts to “an international war bank to be located in Canada” that “will further the militarization of our economy” and “deserves a thorough public debate.” The article situates the NDP reaction within the broader coverage of Carney’s NATO agenda.
